SPEECH BY DR. OGBONNAYA ONU, HONOURABLE MINISTER OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, DURING HIS VISIT TO NATIONAL AGENCY FOR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING INFRASTRUCTURE (NASENI) HEADQUARTERS, ABUJA TO INSPECT NASENI ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINE ON TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 2017

Protocol:

I am very happy to be visiting NASENI again. I recall when last I was here, I was impressed with the work that is going on in NASENI. The capacity which we are building in NASENI to do reverse engineering is very important to us. We spend a lot of money every year importing equipment in ships into the country and this is not helpful to our economy. We are losing a lot of jobs. We have few Engineers and Scientists in Nigeria and yet we can’t find jobs for them. This is no longer acceptable. We must find jobs for our Engineers and Scientists, indeed for all Nigerians who want to work. President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is committed to making sure that not only will this economy be revived, but the economy will grow and we will be in a position to find jobs for our people. NASENI is playing an important role and will play even a more important role in future to make sure that we are able to produce many of the machines and equipment that we currently import into the country.

ADDRESS BY DR. OGBONNAYA ONU, HONOURABLE MINISTER OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AT THE CLOSING CEREMONY OF THE TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION EXPO 2017 HOLDING AT THE EAGLE SQUARE, ABUJA, ON FRIDAY, APRIL 7, 2017

Exactly five days ago, we made history by showing that where there is the will, there is a way! On that day, we began the journey of showing clearly that the way for Nigeria to go in her search for enduring greatness is through science and technology. We showed we can do it. We showed that when challenged, the Nigerian spirit can endure any pain and rise above any challenge to make the difference. Today’s event shows clearly that with the power of imagination and vision, Nigeria can surely rise like the morning sun to utilize science, technology and innovation to build a new nation with a knowledge based, innovation driven economy.

As I stand before you, I have a story to share with you all. Last month, just a few days ago, a Nigerian in South Africa, Ademilola Odujinrin, flew a plane round the world without a Co-Pilot. He is the first African to do so. He was able to achieve this feat because of the spirit of adventure which many Nigerians have in rich supply. It is this spirit of adventure that nurtures creativity which fires innovation as a driving force in opening new frontiers. We should never forget that adventure is the manure that nurtures creativity to thrive and blossom.

FULL TEXT OF A SPEECH BY DR. OGBONNAYA ONU, AS HOST OF THE PUBLIC PRESENTATION CEREMONY OF THE BOOK “FROM OPPOSITION TO GOVERNING PARTY: NIGERIA’S APC MERGER STORY”, HOLDING AT THE SHEHU MUSA YAR’ADUA CENTER, ABUJA, ON DECEMBER 7, 2015.

PROTOCOL:

It is with happiness that I sincerely thank all of you for attending this ceremony. I know that it is not easy to attend such an occasion as this, in the early working hours of a Monday in a new week. I remain very grateful.

The book that had just been presented to you, describes an event that is not only unique but historic. This event has never happened in Nigeria and also has never happened in Africa. What took place in the past, in some African countries, was a situation where some opposition political parties came together, in an alliance or a coalition to defeat a governing political party in a general election. But here in Nigeria, in our 55th year of independence, three major opposition political parties that controlled government at the State level, gave up their identities, became deregistered and defunct, and in the process successfully formed a merger, whose rank was enlarged by many other groups to form the largest opposition political party in the history of our country. The then opposition political party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), successfully defeated the then governing political Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the 2015 general election. This became the first time in our political history, that a President elected on a platform of a governing political party, was defeated in an election by the candidate of an opposition political party. A SPEECH DELIVERED BY DR. OGBONNAYA ONU TO THE LEADERS OF THE APC IN THE SOUTH EAST, ON APRIL 2, 2015, AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTER, OWERRI, IMO STATE, NIGERIA.

PROTOCOL:

I feel very happy to stand on the sacred soil of the ancient city of Owerri to speak to you at this critical moment in the history of our dear country. There is no reason why the people of the South East should not embrace the All Progressives Congress (APC). There is no reason why the people of the South East should not take the APC as their own. One day when the story is told, it will be known by all that the effort that finally led to the registration of the APC was initiated by someone from the South East. It is important to know that the result announced by INEC is not a true reflection of the level of support the people of the South East have for the APC. The Card Reader was presented from functioning, result sheets were not provided in the polling centers, security agents were wrongly deployed to come to polling centers to forcefully collect election materials to criminally enable election results to be written in private homes. The gallant members of the APC in the South East had given to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 presidential election the same number of votes they gave in 2011, APC would not have had the victory that is rightly ours. Also the support of the people of the South East resident in the 19 Northern States and the FCT is clearly shown in the election results announced by the INEC. Read more
